BIRD WALK AT HUBER WOODS
August 20, 2009

Fifteen people joined us for a sultry Bird Walk to Huber Woods on the evening of August 20th. This bird walk was led by Sam Skinner, naturalist at the Huber Woods Environmental Center.  Temperatures were in the 90’s with high humidity, even when the bird walk started at 6pm.  The birds were smarter than we were, and most stayed quiet and under cover.

Blue-winged WarblerThe high point of the walk was a Blue-winged Warbler (see picture to the left), which gave us good views as we walked around the Visitor’s Center.  Other birds we saw in and around the Visitor’s Center included:  a Cedar Waxwing, a female Baltimore Oriole, lots of Catbirds, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, Mockingbirds, a White-breasted Nuthatch and a calling Carolina WrenChimney Swifts flew overhead. At the feeders in the back of the Center, we saw the usual cast of characters:  Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, Goldfinches, Cardinals, Mourning Doves, House Finches, Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Starlings, House Sparrows and Common Grackles

Indigo BuntingWe ended the evening with a walk around the field in front of the Visitor’s Center.  Several of us hear a calling Eastern Towhee.  A few of us also got a glimpse of an Indigo Bunting (see picture to the left).

Admittedly, with the heat and humidity, we didn’t see that much; we called it quits at 7:15. Join us for our next walk to Sandy Hook on September 19.  Hopefully, the weather will be MUCH better!
