OK folks, you missed a fun walk this time! A group of twelve gathered in the first parking lot at Thompson Park at 6 PM on May 22. The temperature was 80 degrees, with a light wind. The pictures below were taken by Linda Rovder, one of the participants on the walk. Many thanks to Linda for sharing them with us!
We were all treated to good views of a Chipping Sparrow on the ground. A migrating Common Nighthawk called from overhead.
We next took a walk around the parking loop. We all saw Yellow Warblers and heard them sing. A Red-tailed Hawk flew in and perched nearby. We stopped by the woods and listened to Red-eyed Vireos and Wood Thrushes singing. Further down the trail we found pair of nest boxes. A Tree Swallow family was living in one box and Eastern Bluebirds were in the other box. We got great views of both the male and the female. Warbling Vireos were singing in the nearby trees.
We drove to the Purple Martin colony and observed a large group of Martins coming and going. In addition, an Orchard Oriole sang for us from a treetop.
Next it was on to Marlu Lake. A beautiful male Baltimore Oriole sang and gave us great views. A flock of Cedar Waxwings flew in. A walk to the grasslands yielded singing Eastern Meadowlarks; some people actually got to see some of them! We also heard and saw Gray Catbirds and American Robins. Everyone got a good look at a nearby Song Sparrow. We heard, but did not see, Field Sparrows and Common Yellowthroats. There were several Indigo Buntings singing for us; we got a brief view of one, but most of the others stayed hidden. By the lake we found many Barn Swallows and one Rough-winged Swallow that landed briefly.
At 8 PM we called it a day. I was an outstanding evening of birding!
