BIRD WALK AT SANDY HOOK
April 18, 2009

Eighteen of us met at the Sandy Hook Visitor's Center at 9AM.  The weather that morning was great, with temperatures in the 70s and a light breeze.

Exploring Spermaceti Cove

We started at Spermaceti Cove where we caught a pair of Ospreys on their nest, in the act of reproduction!  We saw Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets, and a Great Blue Heron. A pair of American Oystercatchers were close by on the shore, and a Boat-tailed Grackle perched on the railing near us. A pair of Turkey Vultures rested on the ground before taking off. Among the lingering winter waterfowl were Brant, Bufflehead, and Red-breasted Merganser.

Followed by Gardian Park

Next we went to Guardian Park.  While there, we were treated to a large flock of Savannah Sparrows, a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a Brown Creeper. A walk through the near-by woods yielded several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a Dark-eyed Junco, and a flock of Double-crested Cormorants flying overhead.

And Ending at the Beach

We then went to Parking Lot K and climbed the Hawk Watch Tower. From there we saw Sharp-shinned Hawks, Cooper’s Hawk, American Kestrel, Northern Harrier, and a Red-tailed Hawk. In a walk around the area we saw Tree Swallows, Barn Swallows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Hermit Thrush, a Belted Kingfisher, Field Sparrow (heard only), an Eastern Phoebe, and a Broad-winged Hawk.

It was a great day of birding!
