Bird Walks Are Led By Our Resident Naturalist Bruce Fetz

MORNING BIRD WALK AT THOMPSON & STEVENSON PARKS
October 18, 2008

Eleven of us met at the main parking area of Thompson Park at 9 AM on Saturday, October 18, 2008.  While it started off a bit chilly, the morning sun warmed the air on that clear and sunny day.  

We started off near the parking area.  There we found:

• An active flock of Yellow-rumped Warblers in the adjacent Cedar trees
• A flock of 20 Cedar Waxwings posing for us in a bare Walnut Tree

We next drove to Thompson Park's Marlu Lake, about a half mile down the road.  From the lake shore and in the surrounding area we observed:

• White-throated Sparrows (that were singing)
• 3 immature White-crowned Sparrows
• A flock of over 100 American Crows were active in the nearby fields, and a single Fish Crow gave us a call.
• Both Turkey Vultures and a Red-tailed Hawk soared overhead

We then left Thompson Park and took a short drive to Stevenson Park, where we explored a different type of habitat.  It was here that we found:

• Large flocks of American Robins and Yellow-rumped Warblers
• The woods held many White-throated Sparrows
• The lake at Stevenson's hosted a number of Mallards, Canada Geese, Mute Swans and a Great Egret.  A real treat was spotting 3 Wood Ducks
• After we left the lake, we saw Downy Woodpeckers, Northern Flickers, and one Eastern Phoebe sitting up and wagging its tail.

We kept going until 12 noon when we reluctantly called it a day.
