Bird Walk Notes

SPRING BIRD WALK AT THOMPSON PARK  (MAY 22, 2008)

Twelve of us met at Thompson Park in Lincroft at 6 PM for a walk. After a week of cold and rainy weather, we finally got clear skies, but it remained cool and windy. We walked the area around the parking lot and found:

  • An Eastern Bluebird near its nest box.
  • A group of Eastern Kingbirds was spotted near the trail.
  • A Warbling Vireo was singing, but we didn’t see it.
  • Barn Swallows flew over the field.
  • Chipping Sparrows were heard singing from the parking lot.

We next went to Martin houses.

  • House Sparrows were living in some of the apartments
  • We finally saw a Purple Martin leaving a nest.
  • Tree Swallows were nesting nearby.
  • More Eastern Bluebirds were also there.

We then walked the trails near Marlu Lake.

  • A male Orchard Oriole perched up and sang.
  • We got great looks at Baltimore Orioles.
  • We also saw a number of Yellow Warblers.
  • A Great Blue Heron flew by.
  • A number of Indigo Buntings were singing
  • A Field Sparrow was seen on the path.
  • A distant Eastern Meadowlark was heard.
  • There was a Spotted Sandpiper  by the lake.

We ended the evening with a Common Yellowthroat and more Eastern Bluebirds. It was a fun evening.
